Melvin Jones 1879-1961: “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else.” This is a quote from Melvin Jones, founder of Lions Clubs International. Lions Clubs International was formed in 1917 because Melvin Jones had a vision of successful business minded people putting their talents to serving and improving their communities. From the age of 38, he devoted himself to the cause of finding civic minded people willing to serve their communities and providing them with the leadership skills necessary to carry out the work. In 1945, he was honoured to represent the Lions Club as a consultant at the organization of the United Nation in San Francisco.
Melvin Jones statement, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else”, has become a guiding principle for public-minded people around the world involved in Lions Clubs.
